SignalEx: Relating the Channel to Modem Performance
نویسندگان
چکیده
The rapid international development of the mobile phone business has led to significant advances in communications engineering. However, the experience base for underwater acoustic communications is much more limited. Meanwhile, the ocean channel has unique characteristics, so that one cannot assume radio modulation schemes are suitable for acoustic communications in the ocean (and vice versa). Users of acoustic modems in the ocean often find that a system that worked well in one area performs badly or not at all in a new site. In general, the acomms community does not have a capability to reliably predict network performance in new sites. The objective of the SignalEx tests is address this problem by developing insights about how different environmental conditions affect different signaling schemes.

Telesonar Testbed Instrument Provides a Flexible Platform for Acoustic Propagation and Communication Research in the 8 – 50 kHz Band
The underwater channel remains a difficult medium for transmitting communication signals. Frequent field tests are required for validating models, testing new waveforms and coding schemes, developing link protocols, designing an adaptive multi-mode modem, testing third-party prototype modems, testing a new directional transducer, and developing new DSPefficient algorithms. A modular, flexible, ...
متن کاملBandwidth scheduling for multi-channel packet cable telephony
Cable networks have evolved from offering broadcast services to providing high rate two-way data services. In the next step, cable operators intend to use Voice over IP (VoIP) to provide cable telephony services. In a cable network the users are connected to the headend through a cable modem. The headend is responsible for allocating upstream bandwidth to the various cable modems. Each cable mo...
متن کاملMild Aggression : A new approach for improving TCP Performance in Asymmetric Networks
An asymmetric network is one in which there is a mismatch between the characteristics of the forward and reverse channel. Typically, the forward channel is capable of high transmission rates and the reverse channel has lesser bandwidth. Cable modem networks and satellite networks are some technologies that exhibit network asymmetry. TCP, due to its widespread acceptance, is also used in asymmet...
متن کاملThe MXL MAC Protocol for HFC Networks
The paper describes the upstream MAC protocol employed by the HP cable-modem for hybridber-coax networks. The protocol, called MXL, divides the upstream channel into two logical channels: a contention channel and a reserved channel. Cablemodem stations that need to send data have to reserve su cient bandwidth in the reserved channel. In order to send their reservation request, the stations have...
متن کاملComparison of Contention Resolution Algorithms for a Cable Modem Mac Protocol
A reservation-based MAC protocol has been adopted by standards bodies as the basic protocol for data communication within the upstream channel of a cable plant. The available capacity is divided in two separate channels. One is a random access channel, or contention channel, used to send requests to the head-end, with the possibility of collisions occurring therein. When collisions happen, they...
